ISO 53001 is one to watch. Here is what we know so far – and why it matters for your business.
There is a new ISO standard on the horizon that every sustainability-conscious business should have on their radar. ISO 53001 – developed jointly by ISO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – is the world’s first management system standard specifically designed to help organisations contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Publication is expected in late 2026. But the groundwork has already been laid, and businesses that start preparing now will be significantly ahead of the curve.
What are the UN SDGs – and why do they matter for business?
The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by world leaders in 2015 as a shared blueprint for a better, more sustainable future by 2030. They cover everything from climate action and clean energy to gender equality, decent work, and reduced inequalities.
Businesses have been aligning their ESG strategies to the SDGs for years. The challenge has always been that there was no internationally recognised standard for how to do it well, how to measure it credibly, or how to demonstrate progress to stakeholders. ISO 53001 changes that.
What is ISO 53001?
- ISO 53001 is a certifiable management system standard – meaning organisations will be able to seek independent, third-party certification against it, just like ISO 14001 or ISO 9001.
- It has been developed in collaboration with UNDP and is closely aligned with UNDP’s existing SDG Impact Standards.
- The standard is designed to be applicable to all organisations, regardless of size, sector, or type – from SMEs to large corporates, and from private businesses to public sector bodies.
A companion document – ISO/UNDP PAS 53002: Guidelines for Contributing to the UN SDGs – has already been published and is freely available to download now. It’s a great way to start familiarising yourself with the framework ahead of the full standard’s release.
What will ISO 53001 require organisations to do?
Based on what has been published in draft and consultation stages, the standard is expected to help organisations:
- Select which SDGs are most relevant to their business and set clear objectives around them
- Embed SDG thinking into strategy, governance, and decision-making – not just as a communications exercise
- Measure and track performance against selected SDG objectives
- Demonstrate continuous improvement over time
- Report on progress in a credible, transparent way – reducing the risk of greenwashing
Why might this be useful for your business?
There are several compelling reasons to pay attention to ISO 53001, even before it is officially published:
- ESG reporting requirements are tightening rapidly. With mandatory sustainability disclosure frameworks expanding across the UK and EU – including the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS) – having a structured, certifiable approach to your SDG contributions could become a significant commercial and compliance advantage.
- Customers and investors are asking harder questions. General sustainability claims are no longer sufficient. Stakeholders want evidence, structure, and credibility. ISO 53001 provides exactly that framework.
- It integrates with your existing ISO standards. ISO 53001 is being developed within the Harmonised Structure (Annex SL), meaning it will sit alongside ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 in an integrated management system – reducing duplication and adding efficiency.
- Early adopters have a competitive edge. Businesses that begin implementing now – even using ISO/UNDP PAS 53002 as a starting point – will be certification-ready when the standard launches, while competitors are still catching up.
What should you do now?
- Read the freely available guidance: Download ISO/UNDP PAS 53002 and start exploring how the SDGs map to your business activities.
- Map your current sustainability activity to the SDGs: Many organisations are already doing more than they realise. Getting that mapped out puts you ahead of most.
- Watch the ISO 53001 development page: The standard is expected in late 2026. Subscribe for updates at org/standard/53001.
- Start building the internal structure: Even without the published standard, building the governance, measurement, and reporting infrastructure now means you will be well prepared for certification when it arrives.
